In this two-part class, you will learn how to forge a damascus billet and then forge that billet into a gorgeous knife. Under the instruction of Rodger LaBrash, you’ll go through the processes of forging, grinding, heat treating, and handling the blade. All materials will be provided.
Part 1: Friday, October 4 – You will forge a damascus billet from 1095 & 15N20 and forge a ladder pattern into it. We will also discuss design ideas for the knife you want to create. We will finish forging the billet on Friday evening but it will be too hot to grind into a knife blank that night. So, your homework will be to get the billet ground and ready for the upcoming knife part of the class. You are welcome to come into the open forge the following Wednesday (October 9) if you do not have the equipment. The following Saturday (October 5) may be available as well – please check with your instructor.
Part 2: October 12-13 You will forge the billet into a 4-5 inch blade, then you’ll go through the processes of grinding, heat treating, and handling the knife. All materials will be provided.
