Workshops and Classes

We offer many classes and workshops throughout the year related to blacksmithing and knifemaking. We also host open forges on a biweekly basis. Check our calendar below to see all of our upcoming events.

Open Forge

If you are interested in taking one of our classes, please attend as many Open Forge nights as you can prior to taking your course! Come and meet the guys, take in the environment, get a feel for the metal and the heat, learn safety, etc.

* This is a great way to prepare you, especially if you’re a beginner!

Join us on scheduled Wednesday’s from 5pm-8pm. It’s $20 to particpate or just stop in to see what’s happening!

Organic Forging Workshop (Full)

When: March 30, 2019

Price $195

In this class you will learn the basics of forging organic shapes. We will work on leaves, several different flowers, and other shapes. The is an entry level class that will teach some basic blacksmithing skills but can also be helpful for smiths who have not approached blacksmithing in an organic form.

* This is a beginner-to-advanced level class. Even experienced Blackmiths will learn something new!

Mokume Gane Workshop (Full)

When: April 20-21, 2019

Price: $500

This class will be instructed by Tedd McDonah, one of the all-time masters at his techinique, mokume in fire!

We will be doing billets from copper and nickel! All materials will be provided.

* Intermediate – to – Advanced level class.

"Blacksmith Knife" Class (Full)

When: May 11, 2019

Price: $225

This is a one day workshop where we will produce a hand forged “Blacksmith Knife”. The knife will be all steel – but leather or paracord can be added to the handle if desired. You will learn the basics of forging, grinding and heat treating the steel.

* Beginner-to-intermediate level course.

EDC Knife Workshop

When: August 3-4, 2019

Time: 6am-1pm

Price $385

Learn the basics of forging an every day carry knife under the instruction of Rodger LaBrash. You will forge a 3-inch long blade from 1084, then go through the processes of grinding, heat treating, and handling the blade to create a finished knife. All materials will be provided.

* This is a beginnger knife making course.

Basic Blacksmithing Workshop

When: September 7, 2019

Price $195

In this class you will learn how to make a bbq steak turner. You will learn the basics of tapering, bending and twisting. If time allows, we will work on another small project. All materials and tools will be provided. Please bring safety glasses and work gloves if you have them. Closed toed shoes are required.

Damascus Knife Workshop

When:   Part 1 – October 4, 2019

Part 2 – October 12-13, 2019

Price $525

In this two part class you will learn how to forge a damascus billet and then forge that billet into a gorgeous knife, under the instruction of Rodger LaBrash.

Part 1: You will make a Damascus billet from 1095 & 15N20 and forge a ladder pattern into it.

Part 2: You will forge the billet into a 4-5 inch blade, then you’ll go through the processes of grinding, heat treating, and handling the knife. All materials will be provided.

* This is an advanced class. 

Friday Night Damascus

When: December 13, 2019

Price: $125

Learn the very basics of forging a simple Damascus billet. The workshop will be at night from 5pm-9pm. The billets will be preassembled so we’ll be able to dive right into forging. All materials are included. Each class is limited to 6 students.

* This is a Beginner level class.

Intro to Blacksmithing for Youth

When: February 4 – March 25, 2019

Times: Monday 5pm-7pm

Price $325

Do you have an interested youth who wants to learn to forge? This workshop is a great place to start! Specifically created for ages 11 thru 16, this 8-week course has room for only 8 participants. So sign up now, it will fill up fast! Materials and use of tools included.

* This is a beginner class for ages 11-16.

Make a Hunter Style Knife (Full)

When: April 13-14, 2019

Price $385

In this class you will learn how to forge and construct a knife in a hunter style. Under the instruction of Rodger LaBrash, you’ll go through the processes of forging, grinding, heat treating, and handling the blade. All materials will be provided. This class is similar but a little more advanced than our basic knife class.

Damascus Knife Workshop (Full)

When:   Part 1 May 10, 2019

Part 2 – June 22-23, 2019

Price $525

Tamahagane Workshop

When: May 31, *June 1, June 2, 2019

Price: $600

Instructed by astounding metals aficionado and bladesmith Clayton Cowart.

*The burn will take place on Saturday June 1, 2019.

Friday night students will have the option of coming to participate in setting up the furnace. Sunday will be the final consolidation unless time allows on Saturday. 

Students will set up and operate a modern tatara, like those used by swordsmiths in Japan, to obtain high grade tamahagane from black sand.

This course will cover the basic theory of furnace construction and metallurgy involved to achieve the elusive jeweled steel as well as learning how to identify, separate, and consolidate the different grades of tamahagane produced.

This is a hands-on course where the students will be assembling the furnace, chopping coal, feeding the tatara, tapping the slag, and pulling the bloom. There will also be a demo on consolidation techniques, tips, and tricks.

* Intermediate level class. 

Hunter/Camp Knife Workshop

When: September 28-29, 2019

Price $350

In this class you will learn how to forge and construct a knife under the instruction of Rodger LaBrash. You will forge a blade from 1084 that 4-5 inches in length, you will then go through the processes of forging, grinding, heat treating, and handling the blade. All materials will be provided.

*This is a great intermediate class.

Folder Workshop with Master Smith Bill Burke

When: November 8-11, 2019

Price: $1,350

We are so excited to host Bill Burke to do this liner lock folder workshop!

* Mono steel will be provided – but if you want to use Damascus, it must be already forged, sized, & ready to start making the blade and fittings.

* This class is for more advanced ‘Smiths.

Chef Knife Workshop

When: December 28-29, 2019

Price $385

In this class you will learn how to forge and construct a chef knife under the instruction of Rodger LaBrash. You will forge am 8-inch blade from 1084 and then you will go through the processes of forging, grinding, heat treating, and handling the blade. All materials will be provided.

* This is an advanced class meant to help you refine your grinding skills.
