About Clayton Cowart

Founder and Owner of Sugarloaf Knife Works in Phoenix, Arizona, Clayton Cowart is a Smith of many talents and rare skill. From bladesmithing and teaching, to producing Tamahagane and figuring out a repeatable process for producing wootz, to selling his own knives at blade shows and competing on Forged in Fire!

Clayton began bladesmithing in 2009 and spent all his free time reading about the craft and forging blades. In 2010, he began studying steel making and metallurgy, and started producing Tamahagane. By 2011, his love of the craft had passed the point of no return and he became a full-time bladesmith. He dedicated himself to learning ancient smelting techniques and quickly became proficient in bloom steel, and cast iron. In 2012, Clayton began teaching Tamahagane workshops all over the state. In 2015, he was experimenting with decarbing cast iron back into steel and found some amazing looking dendrites in one of the cakes. He soon figured out a repeatable process and began producing wootz. In 2016, Clayton competed on the show Forged in Fire (S3 | E7) and finished as a runner up. In 2017, he began touring the west coast and teaching workshops in bladesmithing, blacksmithing, and steel making. His teaching style balances science and art cutting through the mythos to make intimidating tasks seem simple and easy. He specializes in making ancient steel, heat treating, and tight tolerance knife making. He continues studying and teaching, instructing classes at Grizzly Iron, Inc. and sharing the craft, helping to culminate the local forging community.

Sugarloaf Knife Works specializes in hand-forged edged tools, Tamahagane, Bloom steel, Crucible steel, and Damascus. Visit sugarloafknifeworks.com to view more of his work.
